O presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) oficializou a indicação de Gabriel Galípolo para presidir o Banco Central (BC) após o término do mandato de Roberto Campos Neto, em 31 de dezembro de 2023. O anúncio foi feito pelo ministro da Fazenda, Fernando Haddad, nesta quarta-feira (28/8), no Palácio do Planalto, após uma reunião com o presidente da República.
Galípolo, atualmente diretor de Política Monetária do BC desde julho de 2023, antecipou sua volta a Brasília a pedido de Lula, que estava ansioso para anunciar seu nome como o novo chefe da autoridade monetária. Segundo Haddad, a indicação será submetida ao Senado Federal, responsável por sabatinar e aprovar o indicado.
Quem é Gabriel Galípolo?
Gabriel Galípolo, de 42 anos, é natural de São Paulo e tem uma vasta experiência tanto no setor público quanto no privado. Ele atuou como secretário-executivo na Fazenda sob a gestão de Haddad entre janeiro e junho de 2022. Durante as eleições de 2022, Galípolo foi um importante mediador entre a campanha petista e o mercado financeiro, mostrando-se um ator estratégico nesse cenário.
Em sua carreira, Galípolo ainda presidiu o Banco Fator de 2017 a 2021 e fundou a Galípolo Consultoria em 2009, especializada em estudos de viabilidade econômico-financeira de projetos de parcerias público-privadas (PPPs). Caso aprovado, ele assumirá o comando do Banco Central, com o mandato de Roberto Campos Neto terminando no dia 31 de dezembro.
Importante lembrar que a lei de autonomia do BC, de 2021, estabelece mandatos de quatro anos para o presidente e diretores do Banco Central, independentes do mandato presidencial. Esta será a primeira vez que Lula, como presidente, lidará com um chefe do Banco Central que não foi indicado por ele.
